Origami Samples

More art samples for art literacy. This time a little origami fun. I’ll stick with these simpler designs for now.

Progressive Me

Yes, I have new glasses. Yes, they are progressives. Yes, I feel a bit older.

A Tattoo to Honor Me

After my brother passed away my nephew honored him with a tattoo depicting portions of the life we had lost. My nephew did a beautiful thing, but I’m warped enough to have a bit of selfish concern.

Tattoo honoring a lost uncleA Tattoo to Honor Me

It was an honorable gesture
Nephew to an uncle just died

He depicted a life lost
In color and design

A tattoo on his arm
Cleverly, a whole lifeline

My only worry is
Given my place in the line

Nephew, where ya gonna put
A tattoo to honor me

My momma’s got your back
Grandpa’s goin on your knee

Your chest is your momma’s
Another arm your Daddy’s

With five more uncles waitin
What ya gonna do with me

Nephew, where ya gonna put
A tattoo to honor me

It makes me feel real proud
Knowing I’ll be with you

And you can rest assured
I’m always there for you

It don’t sound right but
I wanna be on your bod too

Nephew, where ya gonna put
A tattoo to honor me

Reserve me your ankle
Or maybe your wrist

Joining my brother
Will let me rest

But nephew, favorite nephew,
don’t set me on your…

Nephew, where ya gonna put
A tattoo to honor me

Twitter Use and KFC

Interesting conversation here on demographics of Twitter users. Everyone had their favorite “study” to reference.

One question was use of Twitter amongst the younger crowd. There are many new reports on an upswing in use over just a year ago. This contrasts the theory that Twitter is a place for older West Coast programming types.

KFC apparently agrees that usage is up amongst college age students. They are offering a healthy scholarship to one deserving tweeting student.

The contest is going well if #KFCScholar hashtag usage is a valid indicator. Alas, some are using the opportunity to bash KFC and others are playing with them by running another competition.

I choose to stay publicly neutral on the KFC front, but it looks like everyone is having fun. We’ll see if this healthy offering of student support gives KFC warm hearts or heartburn.

In the end it will be nice to know a deserving student is getting much needed support.

Giving Thanks

I’m thankful I have a wonderful and thoughtful daughter.

To live well in money, is to live well in life.
To live well in heart, is to live well in heaven.
– Ava Menchu

Of course she probably won’t appreciate me posting this, but that is what proud dads do.

Chili in Acorn Squash bowl, delicious!

One of my favorite meals each fall is chili served in an acorn squash bowl. Not much better than this.

Praying Mantis

A praying mantis visited the PCC Sylvania campus this morning. Amazing how attentive it was to people looking at it and talking to it. Appeared to be true interaction and communication.

Now I can add this to my list of wildlife seen on campus: deer, coyote, hummingbirds and other birds, a rat (don’t worry, only once), dogs, bees, ants dragging said bee to – uh – dinner, and, of course, squirrels.

Last Words of The Doctor

“Go to your room! I mean it. I am very, very angry with you. I’m very, very cross. Go… To… Your… Room!”

These were almost the last words for The Doctor and his cohorts as he notes next, “I’m really glad that worked. Those would have been terrible last words.”

This prompted my daughter, who is a complete Doctor Who fanatic, to ask us about good last words.

Of course I offered up “I love you” and there was an offer to provide life guidance. The young lady suggested a person estranged from another could hopefully get the chance to say, “I’m sorry.”

A good conversation thanks to The Doctor. Thanks Doctor, for this and for saving those gasmask people.

Upholstery Projects

My very busy other half has been taking an upholstery class through Community Education at Portland Community College to renew some of our furniture. Below are pictures of two recent accomplishments. The green chair was a garage sale find, you’ll see one before (well, actually in-work) shot. The caned-back chair came from her grandmother and in its previous incarnation was a red chair with padded back. It was only when being deconstructed that she discovered the true chair within. (Hopefully I’ll get a before shot available for you.)

She may have gone a little overboard with her endeavors. Another chair is in process, its twin is next along with a matching love seat and another nice couch. These last two will be accomplished outside of her class. Even with this backlog of projects we picked up another nice find this weekend. There may be an addiction issue here.

Yard Shots

A few photos from the yard checking out the iPhone 4 camera and Photoshop Express app. This post also originated in the WordPress app.

As a whole the process went well but I did have a need to finalize the post on my computer to post the photos as part of a gallery. I couldn’t complete this in the app or in Safari on the iPhone.

Enjoy the photos, it was a beautiful day to be outside.
