Praying Mantis

A praying mantis visited the PCC Sylvania campus this morning. Amazing how attentive it was to people looking at it and talking to it. Appeared to be true interaction and communication.

Now I can add this to my list of wildlife seen on campus: deer, coyote, hummingbirds and other birds, a rat (don’t worry, only once), dogs, bees, ants dragging said bee to – uh – dinner, and, of course, squirrels.

Last Words of The Doctor

“Go to your room! I mean it. I am very, very angry with you. I’m very, very cross. Go… To… Your… Room!”

These were almost the last words for The Doctor and his cohorts as he notes next, “I’m really glad that worked. Those would have been terrible last words.”

This prompted my daughter, who is a complete Doctor Who fanatic, to ask us about good last words.

Of course I offered up “I love you” and there was an offer to provide life guidance. The young lady suggested a person estranged from another could hopefully get the chance to say, “I’m sorry.”

A good conversation thanks to The Doctor. Thanks Doctor, for this and for saving those gasmask people.

Upholstery Projects

My very busy other half has been taking an upholstery class through Community Education at Portland Community College to renew some of our furniture. Below are pictures of two recent accomplishments. The green chair was a garage sale find, you’ll see one before (well, actually in-work) shot. The caned-back chair came from her grandmother and in its previous incarnation was a red chair with padded back. It was only when being deconstructed that she discovered the true chair within. (Hopefully I’ll get a before shot available for you.)

She may have gone a little overboard with her endeavors. Another chair is in process, its twin is next along with a matching love seat and another nice couch. These last two will be accomplished outside of her class. Even with this backlog of projects we picked up another nice find this weekend. There may be an addiction issue here.

Yard Shots

A few photos from the yard checking out the iPhone 4 camera and Photoshop Express app. This post also originated in the WordPress app.

As a whole the process went well but I did have a need to finalize the post on my computer to post the photos as part of a gallery. I couldn’t complete this in the app or in Safari on the iPhone.

Enjoy the photos, it was a beautiful day to be outside.

Out for a Walk

This poem was inspired by memories of my brother who passed away this weekend and by his song Out for a Walk.  (I did borrow one memory from another brother.)

Out for a Walk

My brother is out for a walk
He won’t be coming home

Miles and years separated us
But we’re never far apart

I never knew him as well as I should
Brothers can be that way

Today I listened to his music
He’s not writing any more

I’ll still listen and hear
More than I ever had

He hardly ever played for us to hear
Brothers can be that way

Answers he always had forthcoming
Now he knows so much more

I’d like to hear one more answer
And hear others rebut

Another answer I’m sure I’d shrug off
Brothers can be that way

I keep seeing him spinning me
Around and around by my ankles

Makes me happy and sad
Because he’ll always be

He’ll always be that kid I knew, that adult quietly distant
Brothers can be that way

We had a brush with death
A parent brought us together

Unknowingly our last chance to bond
Physically, those bonds he limited to handshakes

A hug was preferred, should have forced it
Brothers can be that way

My brother is out for a walk
He’s not coming home

A family is now just two, a wife and a son
But never alone

His family is my family, always has been, always will
Brothers can be that way

My brother is out for a walk
He’s not coming home

Brothers can be that way

At the celebration of his life, I read this poem and added this bit for the moment:

My brother is out for a walk
Inspiring this unfinished poem

Leading the way on this voyage
He has taught me much

Will I learn, will I heed these lessons, will we
Brothers can be that way

And to be completely fair
Sisters and parents
We all can be that way

Facebook Allows Removal of Page Creator

It appears that you can now remove any admin, even the creator, from Facebook pages. We were running into an issue with this but it seems that in the last few days this restriction disappeared and any admin could be removed.
I’m curious if some accounts saw this change previously. Strangely I’m not finding a lot of info on the release of this change.

Facebook appears to now allow the removal of any admin, even the creator, from Facebook Pages. Every admin now has a “Remove Admin” link below their name.

In the last few days this creator conundrum seems to have disappeared. I’m curious if some accounts saw this change previously or if this is newly available for all pages.

Based on the large number of ongoing discussions on this topic, there will be many people happy to see this Facebook update.

A Life at Sea?

Last night I awoke to the rhythmic creaking of a brig’s hull making sail for San Francisco bay. Only as I arose to take my watch on deck with the incessant creaking continuing did I take note of the odd city noises in the background. Awareness soon followed; I am not aboard ship but in a hotel room with apparent aspirations of a life at sea.

Now a choice awaits me. Shall I continue to enjoy my virtual life at sea while in the city by the bay or jump ship for that distant silent shoreline across the hall?
